RESOURCES

Our primary classrooms have one computer for each student, allowing students to work along with the lecture. Most other classrooms have computers for presentation, so all classes can involve on the spot problem solving.

In the department we have several labs:

  • A first year lab with 25 PCs for closed, supervised exercises in the first two semesters of computer science. Instructors work closely with students on the exercises.

  • Two upper division Linux labs with 15 Dell Dimensions computers (updated on a regular basis, so some are always of the faster current speeds), four now with dual monitors.

  • A high-end Windows and Mac PC lab with a mix of multimedia equipment and software, including scanners, digital video and still cameras, and scientific grade black and white and color video cameras (the latter are specialized for data capture and robotic vision experiments.) Other additinal resources we have are a number of Lego Mindstorm robotics kits used in various classes and student research projects.

  • A network lab for the construction of small local computer networks as class or research projects, along with a small Beowulf cluster.

  • A hardware lab for digital circuits with a variety of hardware design devices and electronic workbench software.

  • A faculty research lab with high performance systems (> 4 GB memory space).
  • The department connects its labs with a local 1 Gigabit Ethernet network.

Outside of the department the campus has over three hundred PCs, most IBM PCs but some Apple Macs, located in labs available to students, many 24/7. A Novell-based network makes accessible on all these computers a wide range of software that supports many courses, including the introductory computer science courses. There is a digital TV studio on campus that students can get involved in, and the department support an Anime club in its labs.

A campus-wide network includes fiber-optic connections between all buildings and a 15 MB link to the Internet. Students may access the network from campus PC-labs or from dorm rooms.
