Reports

Please submit an electronic copy of your final Hauber report to Dr. James Glenn ([first-initial-][last-name]@cs.loyola.edu) by 3:00 pm on Friday, September 26, 2008.

The objective of writing a report is to gain experience in summarizing a research project. You should write this report so that a scientist familiar with general scientific principles and theories, but not the specific topic of your research, could understand your summer work. Remember that your faculty advisor and the scientific papers you are reading on your topic may serve as resources when preparing this report.

The report should include:

  1. Title Page
    • Title of your project (informative and descriptive)
    • Your name and major
    • Your faculty advisor's name and department
    • Please include (toward the bottom of this page) these words: "Sponsored by the Hauber Fellowship Fund Loyola College in Maryland - Summer 2008"
  2. Abstract: This is a brief summary of what you did, why you did it, what you determined, and what your results mean. An abstract is usually a few sentences and is most easily written after all other sections of the report are finished.
  3. Introduction: Here you present the background information on the problem that you investigated. You should include and properly cite all relevant references.
  4. Materials and Methods: This section contains the procedural details and methodology used during your research and is documented in sufficient detail so that another person can repeat your experiment(s).
  5. Results: Data that you collected are presented in figures, graphs, or tables that are easy to follow. Include any calculations, statistical analyses, or summaries that you completed during your fellowship. Be sure to properly guide the reader to the appropriate figure or table by using references like "See Figure 1" in the text.
  6. Discussion: This section contains the interpretation of your results. Remember, if an experiment did not turn out the way you expected that does not necessarily mean it was a bad experiment. Use this section to explain the anomalies and experimental errors and relate your findings to the current literature.
  7. References: Use the proper citation format used in journals of your area of specialty.

Please type the report double-spaced with 1 inch margins, except for the abstract. The abstract should be single-spaced and have 2 inch left and right margins. Each table, graph, or figure should have a legend. Make sure that all graph axes are easily readable with units.

Posters

Each Hauber Fellow will have a 48x48 area to display a poster. The print shop can handle up to 42x60, so if you need to fill your whole space you will have to print in two pieces.

The print shop requires Adobe PDF files and requests that the physical dimensions recorded in your file match the physical dimensions of your final poster (so when you preview your poster in a PDF viewer you should see one page with no overly large empty borders).

The print shop reports that it will take an average of two or three days to print your posters.
